Dealing with Post Trip Depression

Here are 5 things you should do when your adventures come to an end.

You know what they say – all good things must come to an end. And sadly, the same applies to your travel adventures. Whether you’re feeling down and out about the prospect of heading home or you’ve been dreaming of your own bed for the last few weeks, any seasoned traveler will tell you that stepping through your own front door is a mixture of both relief and disappointment.

So, what can you do to combat the dreaded travel blues? Well, we’ve rounded up 5 things you should do when your adventures come to an end.

Put Your Travel Memories on Display

Incredible pictures, gorgeous trinkets from faraway lands and beautiful mementos that remind you of the most incredible few months of your life. Don’t hide them away in boxes in your closet, instead display them for everyone to see! Make your own photo collage with your favorite pictures, or have them blown up onto big canvases, get some shelves put up in your room or add those little trinkets and items onto bookshelves, your desk, the window sill – display your happiest moments everywhere! They’ll be the perfect little pick me up when you’re feeling a little low.

Keep in Touch With Your New Friends

That wonderful couple you met in that bar in New Zealand, that fellow traveler you woke up on the beach with in Thailand – one of the best things about traveling is the wealth of interesting people you meet along the way. While thanks to social media it’s much easier this day and age to stay in touch with people, you still need to make a conscious effort to do so. You can find out how they’re getting on with their own traveling adventures or, if they’re visiting city not too far from your own, why not arrange to meet?

Set Yourself a New Goal

It’s perfectly natural to feel a little lost when you come home after months of traveling. So, why not put all your energy and spare time into a new goal? You could try a new cooking class or volunteer for a local charity. Many travelers spend time in-between adventures, learning a new language so they can immerse themselves in the culture, even more, the next time they head off.

Find a New Job (Maybe an Online One!)

It doesn’t have to be the start of a career ladder climb, just something to have some funds rolling in and something that will get you out of the house. Many travelers are surprised to see how relatable their new found skills can be in the real world. Your ability to problem solve, communicate effectively, keep calm under pressure – all these skills are transferable and will look great on your resume! If you’re still keen on discovering the world, you could also consider making money online.

Who says your traveling adventures are over? Now you’ve had a real taste of traveling it’s hard not to go back out for more! Plan and finance your next trip, it might take a little while to build up the funds, but it’ll give you something to look forward to.

BEFORE YOU GO

☑ Book your flight: If your flight isn’t booked yet – check out the flights on Skyscanner or via Google Flights. My top saving tip is flexibility. If you’re flexible, you should be able to find a cheaper flight.

☑ Book your accommodation: I always use Airbnb and Booking.com. If you’d rather stay in a hostel, you should take a look at the options on Hostelworld. If you click on the Airbnb link and you don’t have an account yet – you’ll get a $30 discount on your first booking.

☑ Protect your cute face: Oh, you may want to protect your cute face with a travel medical insurance. I would suggest SafetyWing as they offer the best rates, especially for long-term travelers. Otherwise, you can also take a look at World Nomads.

☑ Pack the essentials: You can consult this list when it’s time to pack your bag! Do not leave without a universal charger, a power bank and your passport!

☑  Do you need a visa? If you aren’t sure if you need a visa, it would be a smart idea to take a quick look before you go. You can use iVisa – it’s super useful and easy to use.
