Highlights from a Danube River Cruise in Eastern Europe with AmaWaterways

Going on a river cruise has long been on my bucket list. There's just something about cruising down a major river, stopping in new cities every day, that has always appealed to me. I've been on many ocean cruises and have enjoyed them well enough, but I had a feeling that river cruising was going to be even more my style. And I was definitely right. I spent a week onboard the AmaPrima, cruising down the Danube from Budapest to Bulgaria on AmaWaterways‘ Black Sea Voyage. It's a route that's not as popular as others in Europe (for example, you'll find many more people who have cruised through France and Germany, or the upper part of the Danube), but I wanted a different cruising experience. I didn't want to go where everyone else was going. The Black Sea Voyage was definitely that. We were in a completely different part of Europe — one with history both ancient and recent; one where you still have to pass border controls at every stop; and one where I knew I w...

Untangling the Mystery of the Assos Ruins

I’d endured a turbulent night in Kefalonia. After being struck down by a mystery fever, I had struggled to get so much as a wink of sleep and arose the next day feeling groggy and disorientated. I was so confused that I had convinced myself that my computer was struck down with a virus and I was suddenly unable to move any of my photos to my external hard drive. This was not the case at all. I had just apparently forgotten how to use a computer. Let’s just say that Lewis was less than impressed. Further to this, we always had an ongoing wine saga which was turning rather stressful (scrap that, it was more comical). After the traumas with the corkscrew last night which demolished our beautiful bottle of wine, I requested a new corkscrew form the AirBnB owner to ensure our last few night’s were trouble-free. Not only was he happy to provide us with a fresh corkscrew, he was thrilled at our new-found love of natural wine. In fact, he made his own wine! Sensing our appreciati...

Mallorca Eating-Out Guide: The Best Restaurants in Mallorca

Mallorca is a destination that I keep returning to again and again. There are many reasons why one may fall in love with this island paradise. You only need to glance at some of the many incredible things you can do in Mallorca in order to be sold on arranging a trip. But when I think of Mallorca one thing springs to mind. Food. Mallorca is home to some of the best food I have ever tried in my life. The thought of having to wait back in rainy England each year for summer just so I can jet off each year to have my favourite food, downright depresses me. Why can’t we have food as good back here? So as soon as July hit, I wasted no time booking my flights to the Balearic island for my annual food get away. I’m pretty sure my stomach waits keenly for this trip throughout the year! Whilst I sometimes book a lengthy getaway to make the most of summer, in recent years work has been pretty full-on so this year I was going for a mere 3 nights, Thursday to Sunday. My ...
