10 Reasons Why I’m Dreaming of a Jamaican Holiday

My sister went on a Jamaican Holiday with her fiancee a couple of years ago and her photos gave me such travel envy. I have been to the Caribbean before to Cuba and Aruba, but Jamaica is still on the list.

Jamaica has a lot going for it: white sandy beaches, laid back vibes, sultry nights of dancing and rum, lots and lots of rum (can you tell I love rum). Plus, it’s the land of Usain Bolt and Bob Marley – pretty much the two coolest guys around. Here are ten reasons why I’m dreaming about a Jamaican holiday.

1 – The Climate

Jamaica’s weather is heavenly. For most of the year the island is the definition of a tropical paradise. In fact there are only two short rainy seasons – May/June & November – and even then apparently the worst you’ll usually encounter is a light shower. Jamaican nights are much cooler than the days, giving you a welcome break from the heat in the evenings. Bliss!

2 – The Beaches

Jamaica has some fantastic beaches such as the stretch of coast at Montego Bay. Many people try water sports like windsurfing and jet-skiing for the first time in Jamaica. I’d be all about the Scuba diving though. You can also go horse riding on the beach and in the sea. I LOVE both of these activities. 

3 – Nature hikes

Jamaica’s mountainous interior is a haven for birds and other animals. This was a big deal for my sister as she’s a zoologist specialising in birds. In fact, Jamaica has more endemic species of birds than any other island in the Caribbean, making it a winning choice for birdwatchers. My sister has incredible photos of her feeding hummingbirds that I would definitely want to re-enact. OK, so maybe you’re not like me and your idea of a hike is the walk from your sunbed to the bar – no problem, you can make that important journey in Jamaica too 😉

4 – The Sunsets

Who could resist a magnificent sunset over one of the prettiest islands in the world. Ideally I’d head for the island’s west coast to catch the best views. I love a good sunset photo. 

5 – Kingston

Kingston, Jamaica’s capital city, is said to be a vibrant city with a characteristically chilled out vibe. I’d love to check out the Botanical Gardens & Zoo. I’m a bit obsessed with taking photos of flowers. And how could I go to Jamaica and not drop in at the Bob Marley Museum which is housed in the singer’s former home?! That’s definitely on the list.

6 – Jamaican Music and Dance

From Bob Marley to Sean Paul, Jamaica’s musical heritage is pretty funky. Everywhere you go on the island you’ll find beach bars and dance halls with folk singers to entertain you. It’s all about the reggae on this balmy island paradise. I love a reggae dance party, so I’d be in my element.

7 – All Inclusive resorts

Jamaica is a classic all-inclusive holiday destination with a whole host of resorts that will cater to your every whim and demand. Food, drinks and entertainment will all be bundled up in your package should you choose this brilliant way to travel. Despite what people say about package holidays, I think they’re great. This is a particularly good option for families and couples. A girl’s gotta have a bit of luxury in her life.

8 – Spas and salons

I am ALL about the wellness. Rejuvenate mind and body in Jamaica with a trip to the spa. Have a soothing massage, body scrub or facial in the most relaxing environment imaginable. I’d throw in a manicure and pedicure too for good measure! You’ve got to have a bit of pampering time on a Jamaican holiday.

9 – The Cuisine

Jamaican cuisine is spicy, fruity, zesty and full of colour and life. Popular dishes include curry goat, jerk chicken, salted cod and fried plantain. Wash it all down with a delicious rum cocktail. You’ll find a combination of low budget tasty eateries and more high end places on the island. I imagine I’d struggle somewhat being vegetarian. But in the resorts I think I’d be OK. 

10 – Hidden Treasures

There are some sights you will never forget (in a good way!) and Jamaica is bursting with them. Take a boat trip around the coast of the island and there’s a good chance you will see wild dolphins. Or what about plunging into Blue Lagoon, made famous by the 1988 Tom Cruise flick ‘Cocktail’? I LOVE THAT FILM!! You could even venture into the heart of the island via its underground cave systems.
