Hiking Valle de Cocora in Salento, Colombia: What You Need to Know

Image
Salento, Colombia  is one of the major destinations in Colombia. It’s a small town in Eje Cafetero , Colombia’s picturesque coffee region, located a few hours west of Bogota as the bus drives ( OK, so more like 12 hours ). The region is popular because in it grows one of the world’s most popular drugs: coffee. The town of Salento has numerous coffee farms – including our favorite, Ocaso – but it also has plenty of gorgeous and picturesque hikes. None of those hikes are as notable or as popular as the famous Valle de Cocora hike (Otherwise known as the Cocora Valley hike). We had seen postcard-perfect photos of the towering wax palms and bright green hills, which convinced us – amateur hikers though we are – that we needed to do the Valle de Cocora hike! We arrived in Salento bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to tackle the Valle de Cocora. What we didn’t realize was that the Cocora Valley hike is as difficult and po...

How To: Self-Guided City Tour of Medellin, Colombia for Under $5

Image
Medellin, Colombia is a beautiful city with a brutal history. Behind the red brick buildings of Medellin, against the backdrop of the lush green hills, lies a sinister past. Medellin is one of the very few places that we were actually nervous to visit during our month in Colombia. But once we arrived in Medellin, our fears slipped away. The city of “Eternal Spring” stuck with us. And although we did experience a couple of questionable interactions – isolated incidents during our entire month in Colombia, actually – we generally felt quite safe exploring Medellin. Our favorite and most budget-friendly day in Medellin was spent riding the Metro around the city, exploring and taking the gondolas up into the hills.   One of the things I was told before we left for South America was to not ride the Metro in Medellin.  Apparently, the trains get packed like sardines, which leads to discomfort and a high chance of theft. Y’all, w...

Two Years

Image
Today marks the two year anniversary since Mike’s family and I had to say goodbye to him in the hospital room at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. And I can feel it; it’s like September puts me in a fog of sadness without my even having to think about it. Something in my heart just knows to ache this time of year. I think it’s the change in weather, the colors, it all screams “MIKE!” He adored this time of year, and I just feel his presence more in the fall. This season gives me déjà vu of getting up early and saying goodbye to him as he headed into hunting camp for up to a week at a time. The piles of hunting gear all over the house, the numerous fall fleeces and jackets that Mike insisted all served different purposes, the many different pairs of boots, camouflage clothing, his gazillion coffee cups and the smell of coffee in the air…it’s all him, and I feel it so close to me. I ache. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him, I al...
